SOLAR POWERED FREE PRODUCT SKIMMER
MODEL FPS-12

IMS Environmental offers a solar powered free product recovery system. The system is available with a 2 inch or 4 inch selective oil skimmer and is contained in a weatherproof security enclosure.

Under normal operating conditions, the skimmer floats at the product/water interface allowing the system to selectively pump petroleum products to a sheen (0.02 inches) without pumping water.

TYPICAL SET UP OF RECOVERY SYSTEM (MODEL FPS-12)

  • Set system in desired location. Solar panel must be facing due south in the northern hemisphere and due north in the southern hemisphere. The tilt angle of the solar panel should be set per the site latitude as follows: Latitude of Site

    • Measure depth to product (A).

    • Measure depth to water (B).

    • Calculate product thickness (C=B-A).

    • If product thickness is less than 1 foot:

      • Calculate depth to center of product (P=A+C/2).

      • Subtract 1.33 feet (16 inches) from this distance to determine depth to set skimmer. D=P-1.33

    • If product thickness is greater than 1 foot;

      • Calculate corrected water table (P=A+0.2*C).

      • Subtract 1.33 feet (16 inches) from this distance to determine depth to set skimmer. D=P-1.33

    • Measure depth D from top black disk on skimmer to top of casing. NOTE: For 2" skimmer subtract 1.00 feet instead of 1.33 feet. For 4" Tidal skimmers subtract 2.50 feet instead of 1.33 feet

       

      Example: depth to product: 11.20 feet
      depth to water: 12.70 feet
      product thickness = 12.70-11.20 = 1.5 feet
      corrected water table = 11.20+0.20*1.5 = 11.5 feet
      depth = 11.5-1.33 = 10.17 feet
      Set top black disk on skimmer 10.17 feet below top of casing.

  • Set on and off timers. The on timer should be set to the C mode; the off timer to the G mode (refer to Appendix A & Appendix B). The on time should be sufficient to remove the product accumulated in the well without pumping excess air. The off time should match the amount of time required for the product to recharge. A trial and error approach is used to optimize performance. A typical starting point would be 30 seconds on, 30 minutes off.

  • System is now ready for operation.

TYPICAL OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE (MODEL FPS-12)

The system is designed to require very little attention or maintenance; however it is advisable to check the system on a weekly basis for optimum operation. During weekly checks, the recovery wells should be gauged. If the wells are building product, the timers should be adjusted for more frequent pumping cycles (i.e., decrease off time).

The skimmers should be cleaned before re-installing them in the recovery well. To clean, disconnect the skimmer from the product hose and disassemble (refer to Appendix C). Remove the selective screen and gently rub clean. Clean product can be used to rinse the filter, and a gentle wipe with a latex glove should remove any debris. If necessary, the screen can be cleaned by blowing compressed air through the screen from the inside. Never use a wire brush to clean the filter. The skimmers should then be re-assembled and installed to the correct depth in the well.

The air compressor is oil-less and requires no maintenance. The diaphragm pump requires little to no maintenance. However if replacement parts are needed an operations and maintenance manual is provided and repair kits are available. The battery is a sealed gel-cell battery and requires no maintenance. The solar panel should be cleaned regularly with a glass cleaner and a soft cloth to allow for maximum charge rates.
